I’m the product of a good state government school art education in Western Australia, and like many writers and illustrators have spent some time presenting workshops to students of all ages.
The key thing I try to impress upon students is that art is guided by principles, but not rules, and that it is fundamentally a criticism and appreciation of life, of realising that there is a big difference between looking and seeing. The world exists inside of our head as much as outside of it, and is shaped principally by our imagination, something we can always tune, refresh and improve through the making of images, stories and objects.

Shaun Tan grew up in Perth and works as an artist and writer in Melbourne. He is best known for illustrated books that deal with social and historical subjects through dream-like imagery, widely translated throughout the world and enjoyed by readers of all ages.
Shaun is the recipient of an Academy Award for the animated film The Lost Thing, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in Sweden and Kate Greenaway Medal in the UK. His latest book is Creature: Paintings, Drawings and Reflections. His book Tales from Outer Suburbia has been adapted as an animated TV series, now screening on ABC iview.
