About the Workshop

A visceral approach to painting

About the Workshop

How can we distinguish ourselves from other artists while working within the rules and constraints of representational painting?

We need to recognize the importance of our humanity and individuality as both artists and individuals, and make decisions that reflect our unique perspectives.

Join Solomon Kammer, an internationally recognized artist, in a painting workshop where you will learn how and where to create flexibility within the rules of representational painting, allowing for personal and artistic expression. Discover the power of your distinct choices, learn to paint with intuition, and uncover your artistic identity.

Students will first execute a representational oil painting of an ordinary object employing fundamental technical rules. Subsequently, they will be guided through diverse techniques that can function as a conduit for unencumbered artistic expression.

"The idiosyncratic experience we have of the world constitutes an artist's greatest asset. The objective of this workshop is to endow students with the ability to access their emotions and singular perspectives, and impart the necessary techniques to represent such experiences onto canvas in harmony with their goal to successfully represent a person or object"

Solomon Kammer (she/they) (b. 1991, Australia) is a self-taught Adelaide-based artist who works predominantly in painting. Kammer draws on her own experiences of chronic illness, medical science and gender biases to expose the prejudices, challenges and abuses faced by many women and gender minorities today.

While Kammer’s work is intensely personal, it also speaks to broader experiences of emotional and bodily mistreatment. The bold and confronting compositions Kammer creates speak to underrepresented communities: people living with disability, illness and trauma.

Kammer has been a finalist for numerous major art awards including the Archibald Prize and the Ramsay Prize.
